Fall on the East Coast

Recently we had a fall vacation to the east coast.  We got to see 12 different states!  They were Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine.

The Capital Building.

Day 1

First we arrived in Washington, D.C., and stayed at a hotel in Bethesda, Md.

Day 2

We started by walking to the subway which took us to the National Archives museum.  There we saw lots of history.  They had a fun section of just autographs of famous people.  They all so had the original Declaration of Independence, the Original Bill of Rights, and the Constitution.  Then we got a tour of the Capital building. Then at the end we had a bus tour which was fun, too.

  Day 3

On this day we drove through Virginia to see Mount Vernon (George Washington's home) which was on the Potomac river.  To see a blog post on it click here.

That night we stayed in a hotel at King of Prussia, PA.  We slowly made our way to Philadelphia.  First we stopped by Valley Forge which was cool.

  Day 4

When we arrived, we wanted to try cheesesteak sandwiches, so we went by Pat's and Geno's.  We wanted to try both so we got a little of both.  I honestly preferred Pats.  Geno's was good, too.  Next we saw the Liberty Bell.

Then the last thing in Philadelphia that we saw was Independence Hall.

We drove through Delaware to our next hotel in New Jersey.

     Day 5

This day we woke up and took the ferry across the Hudson river to Manhattan.  Manhattan has over 170,000 people per square mile. We went to Midtown.  There we saw the Metropolitan Museum of Art which was huge.  They had all different types of art from all different eras.  After that we walked through some of central park and saw The Phantom of the Opera musical.  Then we took a bus to the ferry, and took the ferry to the hotel.

Day 6

We took the ferry again.  But this time we went to downtown instead of midtown.  We caught a different ferry that took us by the statue of liberty!  Then we saw the 9/11 memorial.

Day 7

We drove to Newport, Rhode Island.  First we stopped at New Haven, Connecticut.  There, for lunch we got the first burger in the world at Louis' Lunch.  It was super good.  In New Haven we also got the first pizza real pizza in America.

Newport, RI

 Day 8

We finally arrived in Newport.  Newport was established in 1639.  It feels pretty old.  First we went to see the Breakers mansion.  It was truly amazing.  We got a tour of the mansion.  It was awesome. Then after that we did a little family history work on the Palmers' and the Mills' families.  For more information on them click here.  We also got to see Palmer Island.

Day 9

On this day we drove to Portsmouth, New Hamshire, to stay the night.  On the way we saw the Plymouth rock, and another cemetery.

Day 10

We drove through Portland, ME.  It was a very pretty drive seeing all the colors.  We got a super good lobster roll, good clam chowder, and other good food.  Then we stayed the night by Boston, MA.

Day 11

This day we got to see Boston.  We started out our day driving to downtown.  When we arrived we saw the original Cheers bar.  It was super cool from the outside and very identical to the TV show, but the inside was different.  Everything was mixed up.  The replica which was on the freedom trail actually had a very similar inside feel.  We also stopped at the Peabody Museum of Archeology at Harvard.  It was very small but fun.  The freedom trail was really cool and very fun to see.  Boston had a great feel for a city.

Our trip finally came to a end, and we flew home.  We did not see everything but that just means I will have to do another blog post about the east coast.

     The end.
